Patricia Gilbert started as a Postgraduate Researcher at the University of Portsmouth in October 2017. Her PhD research will investigate the factors that have contributed to the success of students from BME and lower socio-economic groups at the University of Portsmouth, with a focus on the role of personal tutoring. She has a BA in Humanities and a Graduate Diploma in Sociology, an MSc in Development Studies and a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching in Lifelong Learning for which she gained a distinction. Her background includes the coordination of an access to higher education programme and she was part of a team which was awarded the Times Higher Education 'Widening Participation Initiative of the Year' in 2008, for a collaborative project with Children’s Centres. Along with a variety of roles in non-governmental organisations, she has taught in adult, further and higher education, and is currently an associate lecturer at Birkbeck, University of London.
