I got my first academic post in 1988 in South Africa working on a programme to improve the transition, sense of belonging, academic achievement and progression into the professions, of black students at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. While the conditions are different, there are many parallels with the patterns of entry into higher education and differential outcomes of different student groups in 2017 in UK higher education. I have a PhD in Education, a PGC LTHE and I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). I work as an Academic Developer and one of my responsibilities is for personal tutoring. I am the Programme Leader on the University's HEA-accredited Professional Development Programme and the Portsmouth lead on the RARA project. The project is a catalyst for staff and students from different areas of the university to work together in exciting and innovative ways.
