Raising Awareness, Raising Aspiration

RARA is enhancing personal tutoring to narrow the gaps in student attainment.

What is RARA?

RARA is a project, funded by the Office for Students, redeveloping personal tutoring to tackle attainment gaps in higher education.

  • Improving access among under-represented groups is important but has not proven to automatically reduce the attainment gap.
  • Even controlling for prior attainment and other relevant factors, the gap remains.
  • RARA aims to explore deeper issues related to the attainment gap, through pedagogical relationships students have with university staff.
  • The project focuses on fostering students’ feelings of belonging and entitlement to the support available throughout their academic studies.
